~Blackthorn Battle~
Later that night as Tamaro sat alone in the quiet Pokémon center, he pulled out his sketchbook and started to draw a Vibrava as best as his memory could recall it. As his fingers did the work, his mind thought about everything that had happened. He had met the town's Gym Leader, researched a lot on Dragon Pokémon by way of books and battle, and he had taken part in a great Pokémon match. After a moment he looked down and realized he had drawn Ampharos as well, a scene of the day's big event.
"That's pretty good," came a familiar voice from right behind him. Tamaro practically jumped out of his seat and spun around to see who was there.
"Krael?" he said, "What are you doing here?"
"I work here a few hours every night," Krael replied.
Tamaro looked and noticed that he had a simple apron on. He looked entirely different than he did on the battlefield. "What do you do?" Tamaro asked.
"I clean up around the place. Sometimes on busy nights I get to help Nurse Joy take care of the Pokémon that come in," he answered.
"That doesn't seem like you, if you don't mind me saying so," Tamaro said at risk of upsetting him.
"No I guess it doesn't. Actually I didn't want this job; My master, Clair recommended it. She thought it would be a humbling experience for me," he admitted with a bit of a smile. "I guess she's probably right, it's been good for me."
"So you're training under Clair huh? You must really want to be a Dragon master then, right?" Tamaro asked.
"Sure do. Lots of people from Blackthorn City have that desire, but Clair doesn't mentor just anyone," he said and then paused, "I guess I'm sounding stuck up again."
"Maybe a little," Tamaro agreed. Both of them started laughing lightly and sat down at a table across from each other. They talked awhile about their most obvious common interest, Pokémon, and then Krael had to head home.
"I want you to know, you battled great out there today. I haven't had a battle like that since the last time I challenged Clair for the Rising Badge," Krael told him in a sincere tone.
"Thanks. Still wasn't enough to win though, was it?" Tamaro said, always a little embarassed by compliments.
"You would have won, if you had only had your Vulpix with you," Krael told him as he turned to leave. Tamaro grabbed his shoulder.
"What do you mean?" he asked.
"That Vupix in recovery is yours, right? I can tell it's been masterfully trained. I'm betting that you were battling today without your best Pokémon out there. If she'd been with you, it would have been a completely different match," he finished as he walked out the door.
Tamaro went to check up on Vulpix who was now wide awake. Nurse Joy gave a final check and released Vulpix from the recovery room. The two of them were ecstatic about being together again. Tamaro always felt like he could go anywhere and do practically anything, with Vulpix by his side...
