From a technical point of view, this was the most interesting picture I'd done in a long while.
Subject:
Gotta hand it to friends with "interesting" tastes to come up with requests that push you out of your comfort zone. This is Daft Punk. As I understand it, they dress up as robots and play music. That's the extent of my knowledge. Requested by my friend Dia as a (late) birthday present.
Concept:
Dia asked for Daft Punk to be doing something crazy that BFFs (which I had too look up and am assuming means Best Friends Forever) do. I'm not sure if this is quite what she had in mind, but I thought about the BFF concept and thought of my sis, who I don't spend much time with anymore but our bond is as strong as ever. We make a point of going bowling together once a year. So, Dia and I sort of have a similar friendship style of little interaction but lots of love, so I decided to send Daft Punk to the bowling alley!
Style:
Once I'd made up my mind what I was going to be drawing, I knew that semi-realism wasn't going to work, I needed a style that was as wacky as the concept. I decided on a variation of a sort of abstract style I'd used before on occasion, and I instantly liked where it was going (note, there's a lot more that goes into it than meets the eye, deciding which lines should be straight and sharp or smooth and curved, the thickness and thinness to add emphasis to shapes, and so on).
Execution:
No Photoshop here! This was vector all the way in Corel Draw. It's been years since I did a picture that way, although I've never done one quite like this. Other than the one gradient I used on the background, this picture has no outlines, gradients, transparency or anything fancy. It's just objects with solid colors. Kinda cool that way.
